I'm a mechanic and i was reading an article about how a car only needs to be warmed up for approxamatly 30 seconds, but then gental driving until the car is up to opperating temperature, the reason for this is that when you let it warm up for a long time only the engine is warmed up, but when you drive the car the car as a whole warms up together, much better for a car overall.

All depends on the temperature, newer cars with regular maintenance don't need much time but if you can't see out your windows cuz there frosted then you got to let it warm up. If your car needs more time you can usually tell when you start driving (noises, doesn't want to steer of shift) If it feels like your doing damage you probably are but if you really got to think about it your probably OK.

Your engine runs more efficiently when it is warm. Most of today's vehicles are designed to run hotter because of fuel injection and emission controls. If you warm the engine first it gives time for your oil to warm up and flow better thereby lubricating your engine properly. Another consideration is driver comfort and safety. If you let the engine warm up for 5 minutes your heater will begin to work and your defroster will defog the windshield so you can see better and warm up the car so you aren't as cold when you first start to drive.

how cold is cold ? at -35 i let the car warm up for at least 10 min. the power steering pump howls if i move sooner and the defroster blows very cold air and will fog up the inside of the windshield , then for the first few blocks it feels like the tires are square and the CV joints complain worse than my ex-wife.

idling just wears the engine without budging the odo. Engines run best at their design temperature! To get there sooner, start by driving at moderate speeds. your engine will be ok, modern oils flow fine in cold weather
