I have to agree, they are expensive, if ordered, but have you seen the price for the bushes at home fix-it stores? If I remember, they are only about $5-$10 per bush! :)

I am going to guess that the labor and delivery costs are why delivered or even store bought rose bouquet's are expensive, plus I think "if the market bears it" mentality, and perhaps some "supply and demand" as well. Not sure..........

I usually get my wife other flower arrangements, as she is happy to get flowers at all from me (I am not good at thinking to stop somewhere and get her flowers once in awhile), and she loves a lot of different flowers anyway. She's also just really nice that way :)

Roses cost so much because most of them are hybrids and are patented by the developer. Also they are rather hard to grow sometimes, at least until they get established. Unlike most other plants and flowers which are more common, but roses come in a great number of varieties.

commercialy grown roses do require a lot of car to get the quality that consumers expect. As a guy I think we also pay a premium because a regular boquet of flowers just won't cut it for most girlfrieds or wifes especially for Bday or Valentines day. The stores know it and we'll pay whatever it costs.

They are not hard to grow but for holidays such as Valentines day they are usually shipped in from somewhere that is warmer so the prices go up on them.

Commercial roses require a lot of attention and care to get the quality and type consumers look for.
