At 8cm, they would not send you home. Labor doesn't have to hurt. Pain is the body's way of alerting you to injury or illness, labor is neither of those. If you haven't been checked, there is no way to know if you are dilating or how far. The cramps in your pelvic bone may be contractions, or may be cramps from the joints loosening and stretching in preparation for labor. It sounds like you have a lot of questions about labor, you should talk to your doctor or the nurses on the maternity ward in your hospital. It is really important that you walk into labor and delivery with some idea of what will happen and what you may be feeling, it helps keep you from feeling fear and from making labor harder for yourself. If you do not have someone to talk to, you can read the stuff online on sites like WebMD, or BabyTalk, or iVilliage, but you should call your doctor and set up an appointment to talk with him/her ASAP (if you are still in your second trimester then talk with your doc at the next appt.).
I have had two babies and I didn't have a lot of pain, it felt like moderate menstrual cramps and then they increased in intensity but not in pain. My water never broke naturally, the doctor broke my water at about 6-7cm to help get labor moving faster. Babies can be born with the amniotic sac intact and they break it after birth but they usually break it long before that. The hardest part for me was getting from 4cm to 7cm. I was feeling impatient, and the contractions were the most uncomfortable then, after 7cm, it went really fast. When the baby was ready to come and it was time to push I got kind-of a panicky feeling like when you have diarrhea and are trying to make it to the nearest gas station. The best thing you can do is to teach yourself to focus and remain in control of yourself. For me, I would think about the baby and not about myself, I would do what the baby needed and thinks about what was best for the baby. Some people prefer to think of another place or time. Talk with your mom, or another woman who has had kids, talk with your spouse, the things that help you relax now will probably help you relax during labor, and you MUST talk with your doctor, it is important that you and your doctor discuss what he/she usually does during labor and what you can expect.
Best wishes.

You can't tell if you are dilated. You have to be checked by a nurse or doctor.

The hospital would not send you home!!!!

You can be 10 cm with an unbroken water (happened to me, nurse broke it).

If you are this far without pain, lucky, lucky, lucky girl!

if your pubic bone hurts its becouse of the baby moving down into the birth canal if your having really strong braxton hicks (period like cramps) you probibly dialting little by little .the hospital would keep you if you are dialated and give you some meds to speed up contractions and also rupture you membrans(break your water)

they will not send you home ..you and they will break your water for you if it does not break when you are in labor the pelvic pain is just the baby droping . i have my husband check me but he is a emt which saves us a trip and gas but i would have a nurse or doctor check you ..dont check your self IF you are 4 cm or more ..more than likely they will keep you

no they wont admit you , no one ever knows exact due dates and some babys hang on, i have no idea when i dialated other than when the pains hit. i thought the final stages of dialation are the birth pains.
