My fiance and I cannot seem to find out what these little black bugs are...they are so small they are no bigger than the "O" key. They do fly. They have some kind of hard shell on them too, so I think they are some sort of bettle. We do not know how they got there, we do think that they were attracted to some old dog bones that we had on a top shelf in a box. I didn't dare look in the box box but there were at least twenty covering it. They seem to have a short life span too...I found a lot of dead ones around the box...anyhow their really gross cuz i cannot stand bugs...and I was wondering what they are. If anyone knows pleaz help!!!

Based upon your description it is difficult to speculate. Having said this, you mentioned that the insects appear to have a "hard" shell. This would place them in the order of beetles (coleoptera). In their larval form they may appear as grubs. Their eggs could have possibly been in some form of packaged product, or introduced later in your pantry. Legumes (beans, lentils, peas, etc) often contain small grub-like insects that hatch into small moths. Best thing? Inspect and clean the pantry well. Do this on a regular basis. Keep all food products tightly sealed. Remove old dried foods. Always inspect your food purchases carefully because you are putting it your body. We are most fortunate to have a very safe and secure food delivery system, but occasionally insects, like water, find their way in. By the way, beetles do have a very short life span. Once they pupate from larva to adult they exist for one purpose alone. To have mad sex and mate as quickly as possible. Once the eggs are deposited on a reliable food source the cycle begins again. As this is a cyclical event, it is advisable to inspect your pantry thoroughly on a regular basis. Good luck!
