How much does one spend per day there? (food, sightseeing, shopping?!?) Where is the best place to stay? (regardless of whatever star it is, especially in Cairo, Alexandria, Hurghada, Luxor?) What must I bring? What are some of the safety precautions I must consider especially being a woman&travelling alone? What are the must-see places I must check out there and do? (especially favourite Egyptian pasttimes -I have to watch an Al-Ahly football match&see an Amr Diab concert!!!) Are there any websites that have in-depth traveller's tips and advice about the place? What are some handy arabic phrases I should master? What is the best thing to bring when visiting an Egyptian family? What are some of the scams I should expect when travelling there? Is it better to travel independently or with a tour group? If so, which tour group is the best in Egypt and what does it include??? Thanks.

I always come home with money left over from Egypt. I would say an average of $100 a day but if you are paying for your hotel you may want to know the price of those before you leave. What I did was booked with the Hilton by phone ahead of time. But I prefer staying in homes, YMCA, or guesthouses. Bring a water bottle carrier and always carry water with you. Flip flops are a must for showers etc. a roll of toilet paper, waterless soap. Safety precautions are no different than the usual. Just be aware of your surroundings at all times. (I always feel safe in Egypt) You must see the catacombs in Alexandria if you go there. Then also the usual Luxor, Giza, Abu Simbel, Better plan a second trip Egypt is huge I think that you would need a month at least.
website.....virtualtourist.com Just a few phrases will take you a long way. Egyptians love when you even try to speak their language and will giggle!
Phrases: An-na mob-souta! (I am very happy/content)
Is-zay-yak Inna-harda (How are you today?)
Be-cam da (How much is this?)
Is-say cam (What time is it?)
IL funduk fayn (Where's the hotel?)
If you were bringing one gift for the family I would bring something they could use for hosting people. Last time I brought a beautiful tablecloth. It is their pride and joy to be hospitable. Or individually a dad - a wallet, flashlight or fingernail clipper set a mom - anything; a boy - deflate a soccerball and bring a pump; a girl - a sketchbook with nice markers;
Scams - you wouldn't have any if you had an Egyptian with you otherwise tourist places they will charge you a higher amount (which is still cheap).
I prefer to travel with Egyptian contacts but if I were doing one of the Nile cruises I would go with a tour group.

Also if you can buy any of the following I would recommend them:
Lonely planet phrase book + travel book
www.travelsmith.com sells an audible translator
Plimser Egyptian Arabic ( they come as cheap as $20 )
Try to at least learn counting 1 to 10

Make sure that you can small denominations of money to use.

Dear friend I travel around the world myself
And my advice to you is not to take much cash
with you but just enough to start your first week
and make sure you have(ATM) card because it
gives you better rate and safer beside one single credit card with enough money for the whole trip or more just in case .
Here's a web site for more information about the country with people to ask questions :
www.groups.msn.com/egyptonline2005
The other advices :
Any where you go in the world, tourist is a
moving target to make extra money.
Drink only the bottled water and make sure
it's unopened before you buy it.
Use the national bank or ATM machine only
to change money.
Traveling to Egypt you'll get a lot more Than you think for your $$$$$$$$$$$$$
Have a wonderful trip
Enjoy

Ohh to see Amr Diab or Mohamed Fouad in concert while there... wow.. good luck with that....
Have a great trip I hope that this will help you!
