I recently set up wireless internet in my living room. I bought a wireless PCI card for my comp. The comp gets a strong signal from the router but it wont let me connect to the internet. The IP adress is reading 169.254.xxx.xxx. I read on another post how to renew my IP through the command prompt but every tome I run the ipconfig/renew command it tells me "unable to contact your DHCP server request timed out."

My Linksys router is setup for automatic configuration -DHCP and I have disabled the firewall. Is there any thing else I need to look for in setting it up?

Two options:
1. Setup your wireless router to act as DHCP server, then you will get a 'legal' IP and be able to connect.
2. Look at your wired computer to see what address ranges are used in your network (start->cmd->ipconfig) and then set up an IP address manually on your wireless card to be in the same range (usually 192.168.1.x).

If you give more details I can be more specific.

Those IP lookup sites are not even remotely reliable. Just because it says "California" doesn't mean that's where the original data is really coming from. For example, if one were to trace my IP it would say somewhere in Kansas, even though I'm currently thousands of miles away from there. But that being said, you should never trust anybody on the Internet, ever. Do not give out any personal or financial information to this person, even if you've talked to them for years.

The 169.254 is the Windows default - so yep you're not getting anything from DHCP.

It sounds to me like your DHCP server is not setup correctly. Check the configuration on your DSL/wireless router to be sure DHCP is setup correctly. Also you should be able to check the activity log on your router to see if it is even seeing the DHCP request.

Also you want to be sure that you are attaching to wireless properly with the correct WEP key.

release the ip first before you renew it.
if that wont work, go the LAN icon, right click and then choose repair (thats the same as release/renew)
see if that works...
