are african americans from today's society misusing MLK (martin luther kings) "i have a dream" statement for free handouts instead of doing what he really meant by trying to better themselves by getting education, not asking for welfare, goverment assistants etc.

Actually Martin Luther King. Jr. was more about the black man(person) standing on their own than using a system of handouts. His speech is more about men becoming truly equal in education and respect than "government freebies" he would be appalled by what is going on today - but had he lived it might not. We will never know the good he and those others assassinated could have accomplished-what wisdom we lost. He was a great man-a wise man and his speech was about other men realizing and accomplishing their greatness. Please do not confuse him with lesser so called leaders (self appointed or otherwise) who came after his tragic death and caused the chaos we see today. He united and created a harmonious community - his successors did not.

I have no problem with handouts. They're a way to lift people. Some folks do abuse them, but I think most people don't, regardless of race. Black folks have come a long way, and government assistance has played a part. I don't think the help has been misused, for the most part. It's been a boost.

I've never asked the government to give me anything, I have a job like every other person in America, I went to college and I paid for my own education, so stop generalizing.

WOW...so when black people sign up for assistance from the government they say the "I have a dream" speech??

So what do white people say when they sign up for assistance from the government? I mean you do realize that white people recieve assistance from the government as well dont you??!

Your ignorance is a bliss!

i think that people who use the term "african american" are just furthur pushing the fact that they think that they are different from us. and while some of them DO abuse it, there are ALWAYS ones who use it to try and eliminate the bigotry that still blatently exists in this country.
