i do not believe they can legally require that
i wouldn't give them the ssn number none of them.

Check the company's record with the Better Business Bureau and make sure they are legit. If you know they are a good company to buy from... if their site is an https and not an http website than it is pretty secure. I would never give out the full ssn.

Yes it is ok to use the last 4 of your SSAN for things like this. The last 4 numbers cannot be use to steal your Identy.

The Veterans Administration uses that system. If I call a VA office and give them my name they then ask for my last 4 SSAN to confirm they have the correct persons records pulled up.

Only if you have given them your social security number previously for your credit to be checked. It is common practice to ask for only the last 4 to verify who you are.
