the same way we can tell the difference between a trumpet and a trombone. people (and instruments) produce fundamental frequencies along with harmonics that give everything its' unique sound (or voice). like finger prints no two are exactly alike. even if two peoples' voices are almost identical, the cadence and accent would give your Friends voice away. our hearing is quite remarkable.

Because you talk to him very much and so you recognized his voice!!! It is like you see your friend and see him or her with your own eyes, won't you recognize him when next time he will be in front of you?

Maybe it dates back to the Primate, at a time before any organized language, and all we did was grunt or make other sounds. We learned to recognize members of our family groups by the sounds and tonal differences to distinguish one from another. After doing this for so many milleniums it is bred into the species at this point.
Just like other primates of today can distinguish members of their own family groups by sounds they make.

People have individualized voices just like they have individualized faces. Blind people can recognize you by the sound of your voice of by brushing their fingers very lightly across a small part of your face. Visually-oriented people like you and me don't notice much difference between different people's voices. We also wouldn't be able to tell two elephants apart. However, people who are oriented on sound (like the blind) know that every voice is unique, just like people who train elephants know that every elephant has a unique face.
