What are some ways to take care of it? I heard you're not supposed to turn off the computer but the battery life on this is really bad and I don't wanna keep the charger plugged in all the time. At night I just put it in hibernate or stand by. Is this better than turning it off? I really love my laptop and hope to maintain it as long as possibe. :)

I have the VAIO C series....

anyways heres a basic list to take care of it...

-Always shut it down when not in use, (stand by and hibernate still drains battery

-Let it run on battery alone, or AC, but not both unless charging. If you do, you drain the battery faster

-Keep away from extreme heat or cold.

-Don't drop it or drink beverage near it (you can never predict a clumsy moment)

The above takes care of the HARDWARE itself.

For software care, just the updates on windows, virus scans etc.

-If you ever do spill liquids on it, IMMEDIATELY power off, lay upside down and leave it for at least 24 hrs to dry...

Typical laptop maintenance tips:
1. Keep your laptop free of direct sunlight and moisture.
2. Avoid operating the laptop in conditions where there are too much shocks or vibrations.
3. Do not allow your battery to be fully discharged and don't always charge to 100%. Charge it only when the capacity goes below 70%. Remember the laptop batteries support only limited number of charge-discharge cycles (on an average of 500 times), after which they loose their capacity to store.
4. Do not install unwanted or pirated software. They tend to harm your computer.
5. Keep an upto date Antivirus installed.
6. Hibernate is a good option to use if you intend to use your laptop every day. Standby can be used if you intend to use the laptop after very short breaks - like 30 - 45 mins. Standby takes almost the same amount of power as a running machine.

Turn it off when you are not using it.
Sony has had problems with batteries (catching on fire) so I 'm sure that if yours seems bad, they'll be more than happy to replace it. I'm also sure new batteries in new computers are definitely covered under warranty. From what a read in reviews, you should get 3-5 hours, per charge. If you never turn it off, it needs charging 5 times a day. NOt a good idea.

laptop batteries are a loosing battle. If you charge them and use them to empty, they start to loose their ability to hold a charge. If you always use the laptop with the power plug in, the battery will start to loose their ability to keep a charge. If you're battery life is really bad, it might be a bad battery. I'm pretty sure they don't cover their batteries under than warranty, though. You would probably end up having to buy another battery.

of course.. you love your laptop for about a year or so.. and then you'll eventually gonna have to upgrade.. i suggest don't baby your laptop too much.. the more you try to take care of it, the more you'll get prone to accidents.. Sony Vaios are expensive and pretty much get what you pay for.. like the worries you mentioned.. even if u keep it plugged all day... sony's got it under control, it won't be overcharged or something, hibernate or standby whatever.. stay cool.. and just use it normally..

why let these things bother you instead of being productive with your laptop..

enjoy.
