I've been ask about ply and what is what. So here is the "rule of thumb".
Usually 2 ply is baby yarn or fingering yarn.
3 ply would be sport yarn.
4 ply would be the worsted
last but not least, we have bulky or nubby yarn which is sometimes called 5 ply.

LONG ANSWER>>>>>Print this out!!!
Ok...
Ch = chain a chain is your foundation or base row. It looks like braid but it is not one. If you don't know how to chain, find someone who can teach you and I will explain the rest.
YO = grabbing a piece of yarn with the hook part of the needle.
Sc = single crochet this stitch is done by inserting the hook part of the needle into the chain (one loop in the braid). So, insert the hook in the chain grab a strand of yarn with the hook, now you have 2 loops on the hook. Grab another piece of yarn which makes 3 loops and pull through 2 loops.
Dc = double crochet this stitch is done by first grabbing a piece of yarn (2 loops now on hook) then insert your hook into the chain and pull up a piece of yarn (3 loops on hook) then yarn over (that means grab another piece of yarn) you should now have 4 loops on hook. Pull through 2 loops. Then YO (yarn over) and pull through 2 more loops.
hdc = half double crochet this stitch is done by grabbing a piece of yarn, then insert hook in next chain, pull up a loop, (3 loops) YO (4loops on hook) pull through 3 loops.
Once you know these basic stitches and are good at them and reading them, you can attempt any variation of the stitches.
Give me a holler when you are ready to tie in your ends.

It shows you the stitches and the abreviation used in directions is in parenthesis beside the stitch name.
