I live in So. Calif. and enjoy going to Tijuana or even further south to Ensenada. I also like going to San Felipe for a long weekend. I've heard that soon (or maybe now) I will need a passport. Does anyone have the correct information?.

Here are the rules from the U.S. State Department, the issuers of all US Passports.

If you drive to San Felipe I think the second one applies to you. If you do not currently have a passport obtain one. It is not that big a deal to get one.

Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

If flying you need a passport now. Driving the requirement is supposed to change in 2008 but I hear they are still thinking about a national ID card (cheaper) instead of requiring a passport.

If you go to travel flying you need your passport because is mandatory for any airline. If you go in in bus or car you can pass to mexico without any document, but when you go back to US you will be requested with your passport or your Driver license to pass to US.
Enjoy Mexico, Ensenada and Rosarito, it`s very funny and there are very nice people and very good places to eat and dance ... and cheaper. Enjoy
