I think he is overwhelmed or stressed out by some issue(s) which he may hesitate or not know how to tell you in details. If you still likes him and cares for him, try to undertand what he has gone through. He may need someone to be considerate and able to talk with about his issue(s). He may not be able to open up first to let you know all about that but if you keep in touch with him and remain supportive to him, he will feel appreciated. Just keep a positive attitude toward him. Who knows? One day he may let you know all the things you've never known before which can have a dramatic effect on your relationship between him. Good luck.

Tell him that you will return to his life when he stops acting bipolar and can figure out what he wants. Sounds like a dramatic waste of time and personally, I wouldn't want to be in a close friendship/relationship with someone that confused. When he grows up, then maybe.

Instead of beating yourself up over this situation I would find someone else to try to talk to because obviously he doesn't know what he wants. He sounds like he has some issues that he doesn't know how to deal with himself.
