You can pull something out from the back of the closet, and there are spiders on it.. and based on the number of cobwebs back there, there've been many generations of spiders surviving there somehow.
What do they eat? Dust mites? There are no visible insects back there.

web-spinning spiders are very patient creatures and can sometimes go for quite a while without food. They also tend to "relocate" themselves periodically, so my guess is that they have previously gotten food from elsewhere at one point and moved into the closet, or that the dried dead bodies of their prey have simply turned into plain-old dust.

Just because you can't see the insect doesn't mean they aren't there. Also spiders tare mobile, they don't stay in one spot, they move around the house and probably find a way to the out doors find food there. These are some possiblities.

Many cobwebs aren't spider webs at all - they're accumulations of dust particles that collect in areas with stagnant air or very gentle updrafts - they're essentially 'dustcicles.'

I tend to agree with the premise of the spiders survival being to go back from where it came, outside the house.and that pretty much works for any economy." build it and they will come" must have surely been the spiders plan for life.
