i was watching oprah the other day. her guest claimed that 95% of all american women are wearing the wrong bra size.
so, get yourself properly measured.
if your true size is a 40a, then, no, dont go up. you could make your whole torso uncomfortable, and not as pretty as it c/sh/ould be.

I just want to chime in on this conversation 8 years late to support the woman who originally posted. I am also a 40a/nearly b. There are millions of us out here, but one of the reasons we are 'unheard of' is probably because we are all wearing modified bras that 'will do'. We are those pear shaped women...you know the ones, the ones that are thin up top and then we have these wide hips and thighs? yeah...that's us. We buy dresses in a size 16/18 just to get around our hips and the shoulders slip off because our top is a size 10/12. It sucks, however, I'd rather be a pear than an apple. But here we are 8 years later and still not much recognition from the pretty lingerie market. I have found quite a few good ones on the breast cancer sites, just nothing fancy. Where can I get fancy? And please don't advise to go get a re-measure, lol. I'm 48 and the only time my boobs change size is when I lose weight, and of course the first thing to go is the boobage. Then I'm a very nifty 40aa! Lol

The trouble is that that's a fairly large chest diameter for a very small cup size. I'm an A and I think I see 32, 34, 36, sometimes 38 but never higher.
Here's what you can do:
- Buy a bra that has cups that fit nicely, even if it's too short for the ends to meet in the back.
- Buy a second-hand bra that has a back-strap roughly the same width and color of your other bra.
- Measure, cut, and sew a few inches of the junk bra onto your right-cup-size bra. You'll want to remove the original clasps your bra came with and sew on a few inches of the junk bra's backstrap with its fasteners.
If you do this with black bras, and are patient enough, you should be able to do this seamlessly enough that nobody will notice, even if they see you wearing the bra and no shirt.

Can I just ask if you are finding out your bra size by adding 5 or 6 to your underbust measurement? You might want to just add 3 or 4 instead, as sometimes the band size comes out too big and the cup size too small. Another way to check your band size is to measure the upper ribcage (above the breasts, under the armpits) and use that number instead.
Other possible sizes you could be are 38C or 36DD if your bust measurement is 41 inches. HTH : )

Go to bareneccessities.com they carry the 40A. They have the Glamorise and the Dominique. They even have a strapless torsolette and a soft cup bra. That's where i buy my bras, going on 4 years. Their bras are very well priced like around $20.00. Hope this helps you.

Go to Victorias secret and shop for a bra. They measure you for free.. And if you can't afford it just make an excuse and leave..By the way I never heard of 40 A as a bra size

A friend of mine went to Nordstrom and was custom fitted for a bra. She raved about the experience and said that the woman who helped her was excellent and had been helping ladies for over 30 years. Nordstrom is also known for custom fitting women who have had mastectomies so I'm sure they will be able to help you!
