This is actually quite common in the animal kingdom, especially with mammals.
Dogs (large and small), cats (large and small), bears, wolves, etc. are known for using urine as markers to designate territorial boundaries. This is a common system of boundary marking for many animals which live in a given area either as a community or in solitude.
The urine acts like a chemical gate. The animal that gets near a urine marked tree/rock/thing will smell the odor and either walk away or around it, or mark it again with its own urine to either claim the area for itself or call out the original "owner" for a challenge.

canines /wolves will urinate to mark their territory to ward off different wolves canines it truly is a food territory component, bears will scar trees on there territory each so often undergo territories will overlap because of the large length ,they could also not be in factors of there territory for a year or 2,if territory is violated and the dominant animal confronts the a lot less dominant animal the lesser might want to placed up and go away if not then a wrestle for the territory might want to ensue winner takes all food and women
