Scrape the hide thouroughly. Get a large (15 gallons or so) washtub.Put the hide into the tub. Get all the oak bark, or oak sticks, you can get. Put them on the hide. Fill the tub with water. If the hide still floats place cinderblocks on it. Keep it submerged for 3 days. Take the hide out and scrape it again as necassary. Soak it another 24 hours. Take the hide out and rinse it off. Stretch it on a frame and let it dry. Once a day brush the hide with a solution of your own urine. When it gets nice and supple rinse it one more time and apply mink oil to the non-furred side. The oak is rich in "tannic acid." You might start saving your urine in old milk jugs prior to the process.

Back in the old days we used to use the acid from a tree (preferably a hemlock) to tan the hides.
