Nothing... and Everything...

Contrary to common belief, there is more space than there is matter. Even an atom is actually made of 99.99% space (or void).
And matter isn't solid at all - it is just energy vibrations at different frequencies. So, there is really just energy and space - no matter or solids.

The perception of 'solids' is caused by energy vibrations (or waves) that counter each other such as two waves collide- they crash and push each other away. So, when you 'touch' a 'solid' object, your finger - which is made of energy waves - is pushing the object's energy waves, and therefore, a 'sensation' is perceived in your nerves - which fire electrical 'energy' impulses to your brain.

On the other hand, if you take into consideration 'gravity', it is another matter. Space, which is basically a weak form of energy, can expand or contract - think of it as an endlessly elastic fabric. Gravity, which is actually a by-product of complex form of congealed energy (called matter), can warp or distort the shape of the fabric of space. When the space is warped, it will alter the trajectories of other bodies in space. So, an object will appear to be 'pulling' other objects in space, but the effects of which will be greater when the distance between them is shorter.

As for the universe, during it's emergence, the universe unfolds it's dimensions from 0 (a point) to 4 (space-time) or more dimensions. During it's contraction period, the universe folds down it's dimensions from 4 or more dimensions to 0 dimensions. This is both the end of the old universe and the beginning of a new universe. Just as an atomic particle winks in and out of existance continuously, the universe also winks in and out of existance continously, creating countless new universes.

Just as an ant setting off walking can never circle the earth, so too, can we never totally circle the vastness of space. To an ant, the circumference of the earth seems infinite. to us, space is infinite. But if we could somehow reach the ends of space, we'd likely find ourselves right back where we started from. It's like being a tiny fish (or microbe, rather) in a huge round aquarium. At least that's one theory. Nobody can say which one is correct, because so far, nobody knows for sure. It's all speculation. If Kirk and Picard couldn't find the end, we sure can't!

As you've mentioned, space(universe) as physical quantity must have limitations. We can't prove yet that it really has limitation cause we're not yet reaching its end. We can't even reach the center of the Earth. Why do we need to know? As man, we can't overcome our limitations.
