i cant stand people who like to bring up the past....how do i deal with them?

That really depends on the context. If you are talking about something from your past that they keep on bringing up and will not let you forget, I would call them to the mat on it and say, "You know it is incredibly rude to keep on bringing up something that happened long ago. I am a different person now and have moved on with my life." Or something to that effect, essentially, shame them (politely) and let them know it is not something you even dwell on.

my mom LOVES to do that but she never brings up the good points just the mistakes (from 10 years ago or longer).. I have had to get to where I just don't talk to her on the phone.. When I do and she starts in, I pull the phone away from my ear... Lately, I have started bringing up her past and of course, she changes the subject like she doesn't know what I am talking about.. People who bring up the past or criticize u are those who don't want to look at their own failures.. it's easier to REMIND others of theirs so u don't have to face your screw ups... There are no magical answers... I wish their was.

Tell them that if they like the past so much why dint they just build a time machine and go back to the Colonial Era. The past sucks. And so does the present.

Tell them that the past is past and done. The only way to move forward is to look into the future.

And if they still don't get it then say "dude, talking about the past is so 2006, so live a little!

I can tell you this, the other day I was talking to my friend and I had already told them that when I used to drink and party hard, I hated the hangovers. I didn't like how much I smoked and how my clothes smelled bad of smoke. Also, about 5 years ago, I was waving at this person and they didn't remember me..
