And why are democrats demanding we be dependent on foreign oil?

That aside, until a viable alternative is found, we can't demand a discovery. You can't benchmark when we'll find the cure for AIDS. You can say when we're gonna find another planet.

Because there is no alternative. We originally started to develop alternatives in the 70's when gas prices tripled. That's where 'Mobil One' synthetic motor oil came from. For some reason the Reagan Administration put energy alternatives on the back burner and the fire went out. Nothing further was done. Now we regret it. I think that John Kerry had a good idea when he ran for president by saying to make it a priority to our scientists and colleges to come up with new fuel alternatives. Unfortunately Bush doesn't think that way. He gave Big Oil a $2 billion tax break to do more drilling instead of devoting the money to alternatives. I believe when a Democrat takes over the White House we'll get going on this.

It really is a catch-22 situation. To stop our dependance on oil every American would have to immediately stop fueling their cars. More than half the homes in the US would have to stop using gas to cook or warm their homes. Factor in the elimination of countless other every day uses of gas and petroleum products. And then we would have to wait out the impact on the oil companies loss of profits before someone creates and mass markets a realistic alternate source of power.

Did it occur to you that demanding that would imply that you'd have to cut on your using your car, having less electricity, being less heated in winter, facing a shortage in goods made out of plastic, and the list could go on for hours? The principle you state has the only flaw that you would have to be much less demanding on your lifestyle. Don't worry, that will happen eventually as we are most likely past or near the so-called "oil-peak", but what you ask will be probably be forced on us, and I doubt you'll welcome this moment.

Because our fragile employment situation and high personal debt per capita has turned us into pale, trembling amoebas who can only taste sweet and oily and make decisions only with our credit cards and/or remote controls.
