I do that too !
And it freaks me out, first I used to be, oh crap, did I do the wrong thing, was this " the love of my life". But in retrospect, I know thats not it.
I think, not being a psychologist to tell the truth, but being a child of God and of the universe, and a hippie from years gone by,
that we dream of exes because of the impossibility of any closure when relationships end. We usually don't really know what the heck happened, why we were so stupid, or where did we go wrong. So we have conflict in our soul which manifests itself in our dream state. Its probably a good thing, a cleansing thing and we should look at it that way instead of thinking we're nuts or still madly in love and need to run after this person.

Because your unconscious mind (when you are sleeping) deals with your past. In dreamology, there is a belief that when you are asleep, you are constantly dealing with past issues.
