I was told that rather than seeing communism at one end of the spectrum and capitalism at the other (or left and right wing) you should in fact see them as circular!?! ie the two extremes are actually quite similar in many ways

Sure there's an in between. Think of a number line with values between 1 and 10. 1 being total free market with no gov't controls and 10 being full on communism with state owned everything.

The USA today is probably a 2 or 3. The gov't plays a significant role in regulating business, and has gov't prograns to make up for capitalism's lackings or excesses.

The old Soviet Union was probably a 9 or 10. The state pretty much owned everything and everyone was paid and given a job, whether things worked or not, and whether they worked or not. Of course, your money wasn't any good if the stores were empty of what you needed.

Anyway, there are many countries that are capitalist, but with much more gov't involvement in regulating and restricting business. They also provide many more services through the gov't. Some work, some don't. Countries such as Belgium, Finland, France, Germany would rank in between 4 and 7, depending on just how involved their gov't is.

Personally, I prefer less gov't involvement. More free market capitalism usually results in a faster growth of the economy. That eventually means the people become richer faster. It's the rising tide lifts all boats theory.

First off, both are negative... since that resulted in the deaths of millions. Communism was seen as the answer to Capitalism in third-world countries because money and greed drove many Europeans on their conquests. Communism was something that was a brief attempt to demolish capitalism. Both are good, if combined. but both are bad... its a choice of which one is worse... Capitalism would be more preferred because no one in America wants to live communally and give up our amenities.

There has to be incentive get people to work which is only done really through self interest so a healthy society must be a successful capitalist one. In that I mean 'work to improve your life for all' not 'work to earn enough not to starve and go homeless.' All the wealth and rewards must benefit all not just go straight to the top.

Communism creates employment problems and always has done even at its very roots. Karl Marx never had a job in his life. Cuba too, most are unemployed there.

I used to like communism in my younger days but its never worked anywhere. Too ideological. Maybe sometime in the distant future it will happen as it was meant to be, when we rid ourselves of selfishness greed and other negative traits.

Hehe. The U.S. is actually the "in between."

Things like social security, welfare and medicare are socialist policies that take taxes from those with a lot and disperse them to those with less.

That is all combined with the normal capitalism that we see on Wall Street every day.

So yes... there is an "in between."

Socialism? Never an inbetween, depends on the person and to what extremes they're willing to go.

Coincidentially, the US is not a purely capitalistic society as everyone thinks. We are more in the middle of the two extremes. We are still considered the ideal economic structure and have been copied the world over.
