Well, the Surfer is really more like an original recurring guest-star than an original Defender. He wasn't around for the team's formation and first mission (issue #1) and usually appeared for an issue or two, then vanished again for an issue or two. But since he knew everyone before the team officially formed, I I guess he barely makes the cut for original flaky member :)
But even Surfer's cosmic awareness isn't gonna turn the tide of this battle- the Defenders are just outnumbered. Lantern & Surfer are a stalemate- nearly unlimited power, Norrin Radd would have to figure out the ring's weakness to defeat Hal, otherwise they keep fighting all day.
The Green Hulk can be physically stalemated or beaten by Superman, or telepathically defeated by the Martian Manhunter, or tricked into calming down by puny bat-face. Namor and Aquaman are a push- I say Namor has a slight edge in physical strength, but Aquaman's command of sea creatures offsets that- besides, you've got Wonder Woman and the Flash available to double-team anyone who proves tougher than expected.
In the Defender's dream scenario, Doc uses his magic to beat Superman or the Manhunter, but if that's where his attention is focused, then Batman or the Flash take him out. And whichever of Supes/J'onn he wasn't battling can at least keep the Hulk busy, if not win. It quickly becomes a numbers game, and the fastest man alive is the difference-maker.
JLA all the way!

This is an interesting one.
Silver Surfer keeps Superman busy for a while.
Martian Manhunter makes himself look like Hulk (you forgot that he can alter his appearance, didn’t you! Well, that’s right, he can. We’re talking about the Original Defenders, and the Original Justice League, with their Original power levels…!) Hulk calms down because he’s met someone like him who can sympathize with his problems (they start singing ‘It’s not easy being Green’ together.)
Aquaman has muscles capable of withstanding the pressures at the bottom of the ocean, too—it just isn’t emphasized very often. Anybody who thinks that Aquaman is not a match, physically, for Namor is simply mistaken. They emphasize the fish telepathy so often that people forget he has other strengths.
While Wonder Woman distracts Doc Strange, Flash and Green lantern find some vibratory plane into another dimension where they can slip past his magical defenses, and Whammo! Fight over.
Okay, Wonder Woman can help Superman Aquaman or J’onn J’onzz if they need it.

Though you give the Justice League of America numerical superiority I'd say with preperation the Defenders would be standing tall and should, as a sign of victory steal the boots off of the Justice League Members.
The Hulk would distract them, while Dr. Strange does a mind zapping spell of some sort. Namor I could see pimp slapping Wonder Woman down, and the Silver Surfer would do a dive from space and rip off Green Lantern's ring.
Defenders the non-team rules the day and the Justice League go back to their headquarters with dirty feet.

Well, lets see. Superman would be out fairly quick with his vulnerability to magic and Namor and Aquaman would be pretty evenly matched, but probably Aquaman would win because of his ability to control sea creatures. Batman would be completely outcalssed and put down early on as well. Manhunter could use his telepathy and disable the Hulk, calm him and return him to human, taking him out. Lantern, Flash and Wonder Woman would have their hands full tag teaming the Surfer who would take Flash out first, (being able to move at similar speeds) Wonder Woman could deflect his energy blasts and Lantern could probably contain him in an energy bubble. That would leave, Manhunter, Lantern, Wonder Woman and Aquaman to face Dr. Strange.
From there I think it would be likely that Strange could stop Wonder Woman by using his magic to interfere with her magicaly based powers. Stopping Aquaman would be simply a matter of containing him in a sphere of magical energy. Manhunter could be subdued in a cage of fire and as for Lantern, well, it would be a matter then as to what was more powerful, the energy of Lantern's ring, or the Crimson energy of Cytorrak that Strange calls upon. My money is on Strange as he does have a few more things to draw on if that doesn't work. That being said it would then have to be the Defenders as Strange would be the last one standing.

The Avengers take it. Here’s why. Partly because of numerical advantage. Defenders have three heavy hitters, (SS, Hulk, Namor) and the Avengers have four (Iron Man, Thor, Wonder Man, Vision.) The others can hit Dr. Strange from too many sides at once for him to be able to react quickly enough to protect himself. (That includes Cap’s thrown shield, Wanda’s hexes, Thor’s thrown hammer. Hawkeye’s arrows and Vision’s solar ray.) If it was more equally balanced, I’d say that the Defenders would win because of Dr. Strange. But, even though it’s a comic book, you simply can’t use ‘magic’ as a synonym for “it always beats technology” or “it doesn’t matter how it really works”. Strange is a human, with human reaction time and reflexes. Sure, he has plenty of magical defenses, and probably some magic based physical defenses, too, but could they stand up to Thor’s (magic) hammer, Wanda’s (psionic) hexes, Cap’s (unbreakable adamantium) shield and Vision’s (energy) ray, all at once…? I don’t think so. Once Doc Strange goes down, they redirect their concentration of fire on the others. All Wanda needs is one shot at each to confuse them, make them go to sleep, or mistake their teammates for their foes. That is probably what Strange’s strategy would be also, if he had a more sizable backup team. 8 JAN 07, 0340 hrs, GMT.

The JLA. They have more people and one of them is Superman. He could grab Hulk and throw him into the sun.
Superman has super-speed and heat vision. He could vaporize Dr. Strange before he could cast a spell, and Namor to boot. Hulk goes into the sun and everyone gangs up on the Siver Surfer. End of story.

The defenders being outnumbered, JLA would easily beat them. It would be a tough fight if Superman was not involved.
