OK, maybe some details would help:
I've NEVER seen this tree out of a line.
They're tall and narrow, all the branches grow almost straight up.
Oftentimes they line walkways for some reason.
In western WA we have tons.
... they're green.
Bald in the winter.
Ummm... just one of those random things I'm curious about, no biggy.

In all probability the tree you refer to is the Lombardy Poplar (Populus nigra 'Italica'). They have been widely planted throughout Europe and the United States. Originally utilized as wind breaks, the poplar has gained in "popularity" and is now seen in commercial and residential plantings. It has few insect enemies but may suffer a blight on their branchlets in some areas; it is extremely resourceful in water gathering, and grows surprisingly fast. If I am correct, the variety you describe has leaves that are a bright green and triangular in shape. When the wind blows there appears a silver sheen to the trees foliage from the lighter-colored underside. They turn a beautiful golden-yellow in autumn. This has helped to make it more common in our landscapes today. This family also includes the quaking aspen and the cottonwood.

The coniferous trees grow in straight line. If you are in a warm climate then i would suggest Polyalthia longifolia, Michelia champaca( excellent frangnant flowering), Casurina to name a few. These are known as avenue plants.

Lots of trees grow in straight lines......if you plant them in a straight line to begin with. I have seen straight lines of evergreens....poplars....various shrubs and who knows what else.

Those are trees that somebody plants - the species isn't the determining factor.

they are the human planted kind, because when God uses squirrels and birds to plant them they dont like to plant them strait. i guess you are referring to fir, spruce, or pine trees that are grown for lumber or pulpwood.
