A great project would be to use a law that didn't pass: The Immigration Reform Act. Have different students assume different roles, and you can have fun with this one...

First of all: it died in Conference Committee. This is a committee where a law lands when the House and Senate pass different versions of the same bill. When the differences are too great to work out: no action, and it never makes to the President's desk for a signing.

There were certain issues on which some members would not compromise, and I believe giving amnesty to illegals (I hate that term!) was the killer. Look up debate on the matter, find out who said what, who was up for re-election, who has lots of Hispanics in their district, etc. Find out who wanted what: Big Business, unions, the President (who was surprisingly progressive on this matter).

Make you presentation like a narrative, and introduce each "player", for example, "Senator Tancredo of Colorado wanted NO amnesty and a 700 mile long wall built on the Mexico-US border." Then a student playing Tancredo (put a big sign on him) stands up and says something stupid and unintentionally racist like, "If God wanted 'em here, he'd have made 'em born Americans!" Have someone with a bleeding heart taped to their chest repeatedly stand up and shout fervently, "What about the children!!!" Etc, etc, etc...In the midst of it all have someone slowly scrawl DOOMED on the board in the background.

Play roles and have a blast. But in the end remind your audience of what HL Mencken said 75 years ago: NEVER confuse Congress with the voice of the People...

What do you do for fun? Try to tie your project into something you really enjoy, it will make it much easier. If you really like being on the computer, make a slideshow. If you really like art, make a poster or something, etc...
