iPods are a subset of MP3 players. They play MP3 files as well as Apple's proprietary m4p files. The main difference is you need to use iTunes to load files on an iPod and music purchased on iTunes can only be played on iPods - unless you convert to a different file format.

If you have music purchased on iTunes that you would like to play on another player, one of the easier ways to convert the files is to burn them to a music CD and then use another program to rip them to MP3.
