Western society's very narrow idea of what a "proper" relationship is. Some people are happy with a relationship that runs on lust but they would be considered dysfunctional because people are supposed to want to get married (straight couples only) and have three kids and a labrador and a white picket fence.
Just another case of people thinking that their way is the only way.

Because we are conditioned in this society to believe that sex is immoral except within the framework of a "meaningful fulfilling (usually monogamous) relationship."

If you and a friend mutually want the same thing and that thing is just sex, and you are both fine with that, and you treat each other with respect and dignity, I don't see any reason why you can't have a relationship of this nature. Just be aware you two need to work out all the obvious issues like is it monogamous or not? And who pays for the condoms? And what happens if one of you starts to develop deeper feelings of... you know, the L word... This is where it can get "sticky."

I don't know for sure whether I understand your question. I'm in a 20 year gay marriage and no, my commitment to my marriage is not based on lust....You can find lust anywhere--you can even pay for it...Love is another matter altogether.

Of course you can - they are the best kind as long as you can get out when the lust is over, and its always over sooner or later.

May be you can start it and have it, but you cannot maintain it running off lust for long.

That's because when you first meet its great. But then it gets old and boring. That's when there is no longer any lust.

You can, they just don't last.
The lust wears off, then you have to deal with the PERSON.
