Doctor Leona McQuire was the kind of Nevada cowgirl Doc Holliday would have respected in the old wild, wild west. She could ride bareback while juggling her black doctor bag, and directing Lil Joe's legs up steep and rocky terrains. "There goes Doc Leona and her billy goat mare," townsfolk would joke.

Sunshine on her back, Doc Leona couldn't help feel at home in the wilderness. Regardless of what wildlife she encountered in her journeys, Doc Leona considred all the wildlife part of her extended family. With her long black hair, parted and put into thick braids, many mistakenly thought she was part Indian, especially with how all the critters seemed to take to her so easily.

But Doc Leona had no Native American blood, on either side of her rowdy family. No, her great, great, great grandparents had come directly from Ireland to Philadelphia. They made their way across Pennsylvania on horseback -- one horse, which the mother rode with Leona's great great grandmother cradled tightly against mom's chest. The great great great grandfather led the way on foot, the rope to the sole horse wound tightly around the palm of his hand until it had chaffed his well-worn skin. The terrain wasn;t easy, with barely a footpath cut along the traces and tracts of the highest mountain ridges.

Once they'd hit southwestern PA, the great great great grandparents (with the gr gr swadled in hand spun blankets), made their way to the great Ohio river. Here thousands of others were migrating also westward. By raft and boat, horseback and wagon train, the couple and their baby (now almost a year old) finally settled for a time in Kansas. But the winters were hard; the last year they endured, they ran out of food long before the Spring thaw allowed access to the roots beneath the soil. Those roots kept them alive until May, when they finally had sold off the remaning cow, and the little furniture they had, and readied their team and wagon for the long trip ahead.

They'd planned to seek their fortune in the California sun. But, between spokes snapping on the old wheels, and losing one of the horses to a broken leg, they weren't going to make more than another 2 or 3 days' drive, or 6 days depending how much they needed to rest their faithful horse. The country was huge; they had to question others in the party just how far they'd come. Water and supplies were almost gone; every day, the search for both ended without finding anything. But yet all they could do was press on.

When they arrived in sun baked Nevada, great great great grandma was burning with fever. It was only a miracle that saw her through. Great great great grandpa had to work while caring for both his wife and young daughter. He strapped a sack across his back to hold the child while he went about his labors. His wife could barely manage that first year to care for herself. But somehow, they managed to survive.

Within a few years, the town was bustling around them. More and more "settlers" came, some planning to continue on west, others too wearied (and disappointed) with the journey they'd already had. The "great great" young child grew strong....

Doc Leona knew she'd been named for that baby who'd survived the journey west. Her great great grandmother had gone on to marry the richest man in those parts back then. But by Doc Leona's birth, the family's money had long been depleted by poor speculation in risky prospects -- and more than one in the family who liked a "little brew" more than labors.

Doc Leona didn't care about the lost money, though. She loved brainstorming her way through life, carving out her own place in the world, despite hardship, despite pain. Her abilities and "heritage" came undoubtedly from her great great great grandparents, and her great great grandmother, who were courageous to make it from cold Philadelphia, to the blazing sun of Nevada. Like Leona, they never knew what was waiting just beyond the next bend.... Leona, the cowgirl-wildlife loving-country doctor liked it that way. Just Lil Joe, her "billy goat" horse, and all the critters in the remaining wilderness to keep her company.....

Well, not funny, but hope you like it!

With sunshine warming his face, the doctor looked up from the patient trying to make sense of the condition and began brainstorming for a solution. He's lived in Nevada for two years now and had never seen such an illness in the cowgirl lying before him, pulled from the ranches to the south. Then he remembered back in the days of Ireland, where he learned his practice.
"The wildlife got the wee, young lady. Got her sick from traveling out so far without enough food and water." He looked down at her with the kindness that is his nature. "She'll be just fine with some rest." And with that the Irish doctor took his leave.

A doctor from Nevada, while walking in the sunshine in Ireland, had a brainstorm. Could I kill a cowgirl with kindness, and if I did would the local wildlife carry off her body?

A bravehearted cowgirl from Nevada killed her doctor after he amputated the wrong arm. In a brainstorm she realized it was an act of kindness considering he could have done it to someone else in the future--a child even. She escaped to Ireland and walked in the sunshine with her herd of sheep, feeling herself a part of the wildlife.

Short and to the point.
A cowgirl from Nevada had a brainstorm about moving to Ireland to study the wildlife.
But she married a doctor and they spent all of their time absorbing the sunshine and accepting the kindness of strangers.

As they stood on the cliffs, along the Atlantic Drive on Achill Island, and looked out over the raging sea, she said to her companion, Linda, 'You know, there is nothing between us and America except about two thousand miles of water. Fascinating, isn't it'. 'A hell of a lot of water too' Linda replied. Althought the Altlantic rollers were covered in white horses, throwing up spray that reached the top of the four hundred feet hight cliffs, the sunshine was still quite warm on their backs. 'Not as warm as the sun back home in Nevada' Linda spoke as she pulled her jumper up over her ears.
The two cowgirls had been on the grand European Tour and whilst in London, had met a character, supposedly an Irish Doctor who convinced them that a trip 'across the water' was a must and that they would be amazed at the wildlife they would find. 'Geeze' Linda's friend Liza pointed to the wildness of the surrounding scene and added 'I thought he was talking about animals - not the goings-on in the pubs at night'.
They returned to their car and drove silently to their 'bed and breakfast' cottage down by the seaside near Keel strand. Mrs. O'Brien, their host was simply kindness to the root and the thatched cottage that they had found on their arrival two days ago was as comfortable as any five star hotel that they had stayed in on their tour so far. The food, both in quality and quantity was out of this world and the price for overnight accommodation was ridiculously low.
It had rained the first day, but it was a soft warm shower that lasted all morning. However, as Linda had pointed out, when the sun did come out, it was as warm and comfortable as any mid-summer's day back home. It was beautiful, spectacular and breathtaking all at the same time.
'I have a suggestion' Liza sat up from the armchair beside the warm turf fire 'I know it's only just gone three o'clock which is the middle of the day over here, but lets just do it'. 'Do what' Linda replied, noting the look in Liza's eyes. She knew that look.
Liza just smiled and said quietly 'Lets do what any self-respecting cowgirl would do and get our butts down to that bar we were in last night and rustle us up a couple of stray bulls. Mrs. O'Brien is away to town to get the weekly shopping and will be gone for a couple of hours'. 'Now that's what I call a great brainstorm' Linda said through her laughter 'I have no intention of leaving Ireland tomorrow, without leaving my brand on a couple of young Irish studs. Fancy some prairie oysters'..................

Sunshine my love. My heart pounds and I am left speechless that you would ask me to do your homework. I know you may be young at heart, but your life will be total chaos if you expect your dreams to come true without doing your own homework. I know you may not think I am worth it, but I have your best interest at heart.
