Ok... i hurt my knee in gymnastics, and the docs said if it did not heal right i would have to get surgery and get these metal things in my knees to make them aligned or something like that. The surgery is on wednesday, and I am really nervous!! can anyone help me feel more positive about this whole thing. I am in level 8 gym, and I am not sure if i should quit. I LOVE the sport but it is very hard on my body and i get hurt a lot. i.e. broken arms, legs, ankle... the list goes on... ALSO I am worried b/c I live in hawaii and if I go on an airplane will the metal dector go off when i walk through it?? Is there a document that enables me to be "ok" when walking through it when I co see my family in Italy?? Thanks you soooo much!!

Yes, you will get a letter from the surgeon explaining the operation and the rod they have put in during the GAMP operation there.
Good luck and do everything the surgeon tells you, inlcuding rest time ok...then you will heal up well.

First of all sweetheart, you worry way too much. You are going to worry yourself to death. There is a website called WebMD that is very helpful at answering medical questions. You will need to be a little bit more specific regarding "metal things" and "making them aligned or something like that" for the website to be of benefit to you but I am sure that either one of your parents or your surgeons' nurse will help you with all your questions. Also perhaps you need to sit down with your parents, your gymnastics coach and all of you discuss the pros and cons of you continuing in the sport. It may not be a good idea for you to continue due to the injuries that you have endured so far and the stress that you could possibly be placing on your body now.

Regarding the metal being put in your body, you may or may not alarm when going thru a metal detector at an airport. This is my expertise as I work for the Department of Homeland Security/Transportation Security Administration aka TSA. If you do alarm you will have screened additionally with a hand held metal detector. This is nothing personal and is painless. Even if you have your documentation with you showing you have metal plates, screws, etc., you still have to be screened. This is just a way a life that we as Americans must adjust to. Again it is painless and only takes a few extra minutes and if you are prepared and cooperative the process will go quickly. Remember TSA personnel are there to make sure that everyone is safe and we love everyone as if they were our family members getting on each and every plane so we do take it personally. We want you to be safe always when flying. So... I hope I have helped you with your questions and if you ever come through Dallas please stop in and say hello. Hope your surgery goes well and your new year is blessed!!!

for the first part dont quit at something you love due to injuires, i did that with softball and i felt as if it was the biggest mistake of my life. i really wish i could go bak to playing softball and i regret qutting due to injuries. i think u should stay with it. and for the surgery. its not a very complex surgery so u should b ok, just try and relax it'll turn out ok in th eend. and for the last part, there is a document that the doctor can give you for the airports, someone i kno has a plate in their shoulder and they have proof that they have it so im sure u could get the same thing...

With so many bones broken try to put more calcuim in your system. Also sometimes it will set off metal detcors BUT they do give you a doctor's note informing them that you have metal in your leg so just showing the slip will help you getting on the plane with less trouble.
