What could be the cause of enlarged and tender breasts? My wife is not pregant. So we have already ruled that out...

She is 27 years old, she had her last period 2 weeks ago and they started bothering her about soon after her period.

It's not uncommon for woman to have swellon, tender breasts during ovulation. Half way through a woman's cycle is when ovulation happens and so the time lines up. But, are you positive she isn't pregnant? It is also possible to have one period and still be pregnant during the early stages.

How old are you? It could be ovulation, but then it's quite possible your breasts are growing. Many women's breasts don't stop growing completely until their twenties. Either that or maybe you're weairing the wrong sized bra. I've known women who complained of sore breasts, went to their doctor, and when the doctor checked them out she simply suggested to go schedule a bra fitting. Nothing to freak out about. Many women (young and old) get sore breasts from a wide variety of mundane reasons.

If she's not pregnant she may have masititus. You need to see a doctor ASAP for antiobiotc if that's the case, or the hospital ER if severe right now. It's serious though so don't let it go!!

Hormones will do this...also, fibrocystic disease in the breast tissue. (lumpy breasts). many women have them. Tell her to lay off caffeine. It will make it worse.
