here's one way:
1) get a myspace
2) say you're here to find people who write children's books and need their books illustrated
3) take pictures of your art (in the lowest possible resolution. it's either something in the six-hundreds or the four hundreds) and post it online
4) search on myspace groups for writers/ writers of children's books and contact them.

Check out the reference section of your local library. This book, Childrens Writers & Illustrators Market 2007 will not be available to check out, as its a 2007 but you can look at it there. They may have the 2006 available for check out.

Writer's Digest Books (and the magazine available at most bookstore newstands) is a big thing.

Good luck!

I would also recommend using online freelance jobs boards such as Elance.com, Freelanceworkexchange.com, Guru.com and the many others like them. You can upload a few samples of your work and then find people on these websites who are looking for illustrators and bid on their projects. Your own website might also work but it also takes more time as you need to market it yourself, so I would go for one of these websites where people are actually looking for illustrators.

First, learn to use your spell check. Then check out this website rmcsbwi.org. They have two conferences a year - you can sign up to talk to an agent or have your portfolio reviewed. These conferences are in Colorado, but the organization has chapters all over.

Send samples of your work (copies only) to publishers, giving an idea of your range and talents. If they like your work, and have room in their "stable", they might take you on. It is NOT an author's job to get books illustrated. Publishers do that.
