I agree the Avengers take it, due to numbers.

The old-school Defenders are the among the heaviest hitters in the Marvel Universe, but the Avengers can stalemate the Silver Surfer with Thor, leaving Cap to figure out how best to utilize a 6 vs 3 advantage.

Iron Man probably annoys Namor to the point that their battle winds up 20 feet underwater, but while Tony Stark is learning to swim in damaged armor, the rest of the team. gangs up and knocks our Dr Strange. While Wonder Man won't win vs the Hulk, he can hold his own for awhile, especially with help. Wanda's hex power really can't be overlooked (hello, Bruce Banner) and Vision & Hawkeye are pretty much free to roam and tag-team wherever Cap spots an opening.

This is an interesting one. Silver Surfer keeps Superman busy for a while. Martian Manhunter makes himself look like Hulk (you forgot that he can alter his appearance, didn’t you! Well, that’s right, he can. We’re talking about the Original Defenders, and the Original Justice League, with their Original power levels…!) Hulk calms down because he’s met someone like him who can sympathize with his problems (they start singing ‘It’s not easy being Green’ together.) Aquaman has muscles capable of withstanding the pressures at the bottom of the ocean, too—it just isn’t emphasized very often. Anybody who thinks that Aquaman is not a match, physically, for Namor is simply mistaken. They emphasize the fish telepathy so often that people forget he has other strengths. While Wonder Woman distracts Doc Strange, Flash and Green lantern find some vibratory plane into another dimension where they can slip past his magical defenses, and Whammo! Fight over. Okay, Wonder Woman can help Superman Aquaman or J’onn J’onzz if they need it. 8 JAN 07, 0357 hrs, GMT.

The Avengers take it. Here’s why. Partly because of numerical advantage. Defenders have three heavy hitters, (SS, Hulk, Namor) and the Avengers have four (Iron Man, Thor, Wonder Man, Vision.) The others can hit Dr. Strange from too many sides at once for him to be able to react quickly enough to protect himself. (That includes Cap’s thrown shield, Wanda’s hexes, Thor’s thrown hammer. Hawkeye’s arrows and Vision’s solar ray.)

If it was more equally balanced, I’d say that the Defenders would win because of Dr. Strange. But, even though it’s a comic book, you simply can’t use ‘magic’ as a synonym for “it always beats technology” or “it doesn’t matter how it really works”. Strange is a human, with human reaction time and reflexes. Sure, he has plenty of magical defenses, and probably some magic based physical defenses, too, but could they stand up to Thor’s (magic) hammer, Wanda’s (psionic) hexes, Cap’s (unbreakable adamantium) shield and Vision’s (energy) ray, all at once…? I don’t think so.

Once Doc Strange goes down, they redirect their concentration of fire on the others. All Wanda needs is one shot at each to confuse them, make them go to sleep, or mistake their teammates for their foes. That is probably what Strange’s strategy would be also, if he had a more sizable backup team.

Are you Kidding , SuperMan could beat the Avengers by Himself.

By the time It took Dr Strange to come up with a spell to slow him down SuperMan Could Burn him to the Ground with Heat Vision OR Rip his Body Apart.

Thor , Superman is just as worthy as Thor to Hold the hammer himself SO Superman Flys at Super Speed Thor Cant See Him takes the Hammer away and Beats his Brains out with It.

Hulk , SuperMan would just hit him a Million times before Hulk could blink Nuff said.

Silver Surfer , This would be a Tuffer Match since we know now Superman can evolve when he needs the Power this would be a fight

I don't know if you meant the Avengers, since you listed their roster instead of the crappy Justice League, but either way my answer is the same.

The Defenders are in a class far above most other super-hero groups. With the exception of Namor, they possess power on a scale that is unmatched by most others. While many others are fighting criminals and mutant threats, these guys were fighting threats of a cosmic scale.

I won't bore you with details, but come on! Silver Surfer and Doctor Strange alone could beat almost anybody, but then throw in the Hulk?!?!?!!! And old Prince Namor, well, you know, he could slap them silly with his little wings on his ankles after the other three guys knock 'em down.
