I know that in America, if you give a donation under $250 you don't need a receipt for tax purposes. Is the same true for Montreal?

IMPORTANT!!! PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY INFO ABOUT IT!!

Hello There!

My advice to you is *always* obtain a receipt for any donation or gift you're attempting to use as a tax deduction. In order for your donation to be tax deductible, you must meet the requirements of the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency). If you're donating to a charity, it MUST be a registered charity. Any registered charity will give you a receipt for an amount over (usually) $10. Always ASK if the charity is registered.
There are other places to which you can contribute, as well.
I've included a link to the Canada Revenue Agency rules listed below. I recommend you go through the e-pamphlet carefully. If by chance you're audited and do not have a receipt, it could lead to financial consequences as well as an in-depth review of all your tax info by CRA Auditors and that isn't fun at all!

Good luck to you, and remember that the Quebec tax law may vary and you might be able to get away without a receipt for a provincial deductions, but the Federal Tax Law requires adherence. You're required to file both federal and provincial taxes. (blah, I know...that wasn't the best news of the day)

Cheers!

Yes you do, last year I did a $100 donation and had a receipt for it and gave it when I did my taxes...

You can find all the info you need on the Canada Revenue Agency web site at :
