Just to clarify the SMS issue in the previous post. GSM text messages are delivered within a few seconds if the destination handset is on and in coverage. If times of 10 minutes are being seen, this is due to limitations in the Short Message Center used in the originator's network and not in GSM

Most of these people are misinformed. CDMA is NOT going away, but TDMA is. The two are completely unrelated. That will be closed down in 08, but no need to worry, b/c this won't affect you.

Verizon and Sprint use CDMA and Cingular and T-Mobile use GSM. Gsm is the world standard, and if you ever plan on traveling outside of North America, you will need GSM service. 3g UMTS HSDPA (which is fancy smancy for lightening fast internet speeds) is only available on GSM. CDMA has an equivalent, but most carriers don't have the data coverage yet (Note the word YET).

GSM does require a sim card, which allows you to switch devices easier (just pop in your sim card to your new handest and voila, the numbers are transferred). Sim cards also ensure that your phone cannot be cloned and may make you feel a bit more secure, although really, cloning fraud is very rare.

In the case of call quality, that really depends on where you are. GSM allows more users on the same tower, so in most cases you are likely to receive fewer fast busies and call failed. However, if you're in a rural area, a cdma phone may work better.

Personally, I'd ask around your local area and see what people are using. In most cases, it's equal quality no matter who you choose. I'd focus more on the manufacturer of your phone's device than the cell phone carrier itself.

Comparing the two is like comparing Ford and Chevy. You'll get a different answer no matter who you talk to. But the reasons above are the main tech differences between the two. The rest is personal opinion.

CDMA is only better if you plan never to use your phone outside of N.American market. CDMA to the best of my knowledge still supports Analog which has a wider coverage from each tower but uses about 4 times the battery power of any digital service. GSM however has distinct advantages such as being a digitial only service. Throughout Continental US and most of Canada you will not be lacking in coverage areas. Battery life is superior, voice quality is close to CD quality and Data Connection is albeit slower for more stable the 1X or predecessors.

Yes I can... (Also, the first answer you received is very incorrect!) CDMA has only just begun. The main reasons CDMA is better is that it has greater coverage in mountainous states. It also can send tex messages across the country in less than 10 seconds. GSM takes up to 10 minutes to send a text across the street. GSM also suffers from being rare in North America. Only Cingular and T Mobile have it in the US. Therefore less roaming partners. Carriers like Verion have expanded very wide spread because of the high amount of CDMA cell sites. Also, GSm have Sim cards. I HATE THEM. The only good thing is they are more wide spread world wide. If you break you sim card your SOL!!! I have always prefered CDMA and nothing else!!!

The technology allows greater clarity over longer distances...However, the CDMA network is being closed down in favour of 3G and nextG
