These tactics WILL NOT work very well:

Bath in tomato juice
Spray with lemon or orange citrus
Masking agents like perfume or Fabreze
How do you eliminate the odor once you have been sprayed by a skunk? Well first of all, you or your dog should have known the warning signs ahead of time. A skunk will give many clear signals before it sprays. If threatened, it will stamp its front feet, arch its back, and shuffle away. If you don't leave right away, it will turn its posterior toward you, raise the tail, and release the smelly musk, a sulfur-alcohol compound, from special glands near the anus. This spray not only stinks, but burns and can cause temporary blindness if it is sprayed directly into the eyes. Since you didn't take heed and got sprayed, here is how to get rid of the smell:
Here is the secret recipe that WORKS. Mix the following:

1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon liquid soap or dish detergent
Mix these together and bathe ("shampoo" in or rub down) the spray victim thoroughly.
Be sure to use this mixture immediately after it is created, as it is unstable.
Rinse with tap water afterward, and repeat if necessary.
For spray in the eyes, flush with water as soon as possible.

If you can't go to all of the trouble of buying hydrogen peroxide at your local drug store, then a 2% vinegar solution will help a bit. But please, don't bother with the old tomato juice tactic unless you want to smell like skunk + tomato.

*Skunk smell removal*
Here's a list of some of the most effective baths for removing skunk smell. They can be used on both people and pets. Here’s some things to keep in mind if when treating a skunked animal:

The sooner you wash your pet, the easier it will be to remove the musk.
Take care not to get any of the bath water into the eyes or ears - it burns. A small amount of vaseline applied to the eyebrows is effective for protecting the eyes.

If you must pick up your animal to wash in the sink or bathtub, use a towel to avoid getting skunked yourself.
Don’t let your pet touch anything inside of your house unless you want it to smell like skunk.
Peroxide/baking soda bath
This is currently the most effective de-skunking bath, but the peroxide can potentially bleach your animals fur. Lemon juice or white vinegar can be substituted for the peroxide, but they don’t work as well.

In the bathtub or a bucket, mix together:

1 gallon water
1 quart hydrogen peroxide ~3% solution
1 cup baking soda
1 good squirt of hand or dish soap
The mixture will fizz. Use a sponge and lather it into the fur/skin taking care to avoid the ears and eyes. Let it sit for 10 minutes, rinse and repeat.

Orange bath
Blend 5-10 oranges in a blender, mix with a little soap and lather up with the resulting liquid. Let it sit for 10 minutes, rinse, then wash with regular shampoo.

Soda bath
Some people swear by bathing their animals in soda. We’ve heard of people using sprite and coke but haven’t yet tested it ourselves. Work the soda into the fur, rinse and then wash with regular shampoo. Repeat as needed and let us know how this one works.

*Commercial skunk smell removers*
Of all the commercially available skunk odor removers, Nature’s Miracle always seems to get the most praise. Find it in your local pet store.

You should use natural enzymes to break down the skunk smell. I'm sure you can research lots of home remedies online or go to your local library where you can probably find out all kinds of info on skunk sprays.

Just like cat pee, you have to attack the smell from the source, with natural cleansers that have the enzymes to do it.

There are products & kits on the market that you can buy such as the ones at :: www.justrite.com which I highly recommend, because I've used their products and they work!!! Or you might like to try this company :: http://www.thornell.com/learn.aspx who only makes odorcides.

Good luck!

I was watching an episode of "Myth Busters" on Discovery Channel last fall and they were testing to see what really gets rid of skunk smell. Tomato product like juice, sauce, paste worked better than anything.

My aunt's dog got sprayed by a skunk, so they had to bath it in tomato sauce A LOT. Gradually the odour lessened, but for a long time the dog smelt of skunk every time it got wet. But the tomato sauce helped a lot!

Other animal stenches - Our dog rolled in a dead seal at the beach. This peroxide and baking soda formula worked to take the horrible stench out for that too!

Skunked! - My dog tangled with a skunk last night. I bathed him with the peroxide formula twice, then shampooed him with his regular shampoo, and finally covered him in a mixture of vanilla extract and water. I let that air-dry and now the skunk smell is gone!

Better solution for skunk odor - We live out in the country, so this is from personal experience. Our chickens are real skunk magnets and we have a dog. We found that a laundry product called Febreze works best of all and you just spray. Protect the dog's eyes.

Tomato Juice bath! I grew up in the country and that's the only thing that worked for us. My Mom always kept at least 3 large cans in the pantry, just for bathing the dogs.
