I have a really simple question. How do I resize an image to make it smaller in memory? What programs are necessary to do this?

Thanks

Not to sound cheap or anything, but what programs resize pictures to make them smaller for free of charge?

Simple answer:
Resizing an image doesn't make it smaller in memory, PERIOD.

There's a few ways.

1) Open the image in Microsoft Paint. Go to Image > Stretch/Skew. Enter a lower percentage for both Horizontal and Vertical (eg 50% by 50%). Save the image and it'll be reduced in file size, depending on the percentage reduced.

2) Use Adobe Photoshop and reduce the image size then save.

3) If you're a Microsoft XP user, go to Microsoft Powertoys for Windows XP site (refer to link below) and download the Image Resizer program from the list on the right. This program enables you to resize images to the desired resolutions, with some default resolutions to choose from and various options like resizing of original image. After installation, you can just right-click the image and select Resize Pictures and select your options from there. Great for resizing photos into thumbnails since you can select multiple pictures and resize them together.

Can't make it smaller in memory.. but it can take up less hard disk space. Get the program Gimp! It's nearly as functional as Adobe photoshop and is completely free since it is open source. http://gimp.org/

so easily .
Install any image editor application such as ACDSee , Macromedia Fireworks ,Photoshop, ....

I prefer ACDSee because that's so user friendly and easy.
open your image via ACDSee , then click on "Resize" button.
then enter your new size or choose a resize percent.
then click "Done" button.
Finally save image via "Ctrl+S" or save image as via"Ctrl+Shift+S"
