I've heard Vancouver East isn't safe, but I don't know what streets/neighborhoods that includes. I'm planning to move to Vancouver, and have started looking at advertisements for rentals, but I won't be able to see much of the city in person, before I move there.

I wonder if you can steer me away from certain streets or neighborhoods that aren't safe for young women to live in. Any specific streets / neighborhoods to avoid? Specifically, how is the Knight St. Kingsway and King Edward St area? Thanks.

Also, what are some well - known street names in West Van, so that I can get my bearings when I read these rental ads. Thanks.

I live in North Vancouver. North and West Van are located across the bridge from Vancouver. Some main streets in West Van are Marine Drive, Bellvue Ave, 15th St. and Mathers ave.
North Van are Third st. Lonsdale Ave, Mountain Hwy, Lynn Valley Rd. Vancouver is a very safe city in general. There are some areas that a single woman should not be out alone after dark. Knight St is primarily commercial as is Kingsway and King Edward. all three are very long and go through many neighbourhoods. I wouldn't recommend living on those streets. They are very busy. email me and I will help you.

That area's not the best or anything - but not entirely "unsafe".

I think considerations like where you are going to work, and how you are getting around play a considerable factor. Public transit here, depending on the route is not entirely pleasant and service isn't always that prompt.. the area you mentioned mightn't be the greatest area to wait for a bus.

West Van on the otherhand is neither cheap, nor especially convenient (it's another city altogether and you need to cross a bridge that can often be clogged with traffic)..

The West End, which is on the downtown peninsula.. would be a good choice to get your bearings around the city.. There are some affordable places, lots of anemnities- many of which are 24hrs, its fairly safe and walking distance from anthing you'd want - including major transit hubs.

I lived on King Ed for a year and, while any place in any city is similar, I never had any problems, especially by Knight St. The East Vancouver badness refers more to Hastings Street between Granville and Commercial Drive.

Are you asking about west vancouver or the west end of vancouver? they are two different places.

I agree, those areas would not be a good choice, esp for a young single woman. Not that they aren't "ok" ... not like the areas you have been warned away from ... but I still wouldn't recomend them.

Take previous answerer up on her offer to help you! That will be the best way of making sure you get into a good area!
