You find the noble gas that comes just before Iodine on the periodic table. That is Krypton (number 36)

That means that you start with [Kr] which gives you 36 e- already. Iodine is element #53 and is in period 5 of the table. Begin with 5s and keep going from 36 until you reach 53 e-.

[Kr] 5s-2, 4d-10, 5d-5 = 53 e-
