the worst signing thus far is without a doubt jd drew if he in fact does sign with boston. bostons signing of julio lugo also is a questionable move seeing as lugo is overrated. im not trying to single out boston, it is just pretty apparent that theo epstein has gone mad. the signing of daisuke matsuzaka does not bode well either. although i believe he will be really good, theyve paid a steep price for him and that can easily backfire if he does not live up to the hype. plus, this is a powerful al east so the constant pressure is always a factor. id also like to add that you have to take a wait and see approach on gil meche. yes he may have been overpaid considering his statistics in previous years, but Kansas City GM Dayton Moore is one of the brighter baseball executives in the game today. So until I see Meche fail in Kansas City, I will not question his signing.

Toronto's signing of Vernon Wells at 18 mil per year. Yes, he is a great player and an all star but I don't think its the best use of money. Toronto should have spent 18 million on pitching through signings or trades. An outfield of Johnson, Rios and star rookie Lind would complement a very strong offencive lineup. Toronto's weakness is pitching. I'd rather have a 10 million and 8 million pitchers. Than 18 million Wells. Is the difference between Wells' numbers and Lind's worth 18 Million?? No way. Lets say Wells puts up 35 homers and 110 RBI. If Lind put up 20 homers and 80 RBI playing full time in the same lineunp slot as Wells, My case is made.

Was there a good signing this year? Off hand I cannot think of anybody that wasn't badly over paid and often players who are not going to have long term success. The Redsox , Royals and Giants all spent huge amounts of money to hurt themselves. That is the funiest thing of it all. It'd be one thing if they were upgrading the team but those three are actually worse teams despite having spent huge sums of money.

If I had to say just one I'd lean with the Zito signing over the JD Drew signing. Mostly because the Giants will be regretting it long after Boston fans say JD who?

Too many to count

Soriano.....yes he is a great player but by the end of his 8 year contract you will be paying him $18 million when he is 38 years old? Cubs overpaid.

Ted Lilly one game over 500 for his career. Cubs overpaid.

Gil Meche (see Ted Lilly)

Mark DeRosa had a career year as a utility man and now the Cubs gave him a 3 year deal to be a 2nd baseman. Should have let Ryan Theriot play. Cubs overpaid.

Barry Zito same explanation as Soriano. With arm troubles that could be a disaster.

Arguably one of the worst signings so far this off-season is Barry Zito with the San Francisco Giants. Zito, who turns 29 this year, signed a 7-year deal for $126 million. Zito's game has been going south since his Cy Young year of 2002. An upside to the move is that AT&T Park is a pitcher's park, but that might not help much. One thing Zito DOES have going for him is that he's durable. But, towards the end of this contract when he hits his mid-30's, that may be a different story. But this is not Zito's problem, it's the market. With a few good players and a lot of mediocre ones, teams are over paying. When you see Gil Meche, a mediocre pitcher at best, getting 5-years $55 million you know something isn't right.

Gil Meche by far. And remember people were complaining about the Blue Jays giving $55 million to BJ Ryan last year

Gil Meche was hands down the worst signing all off-season. 55 million for 5 years for Meche is way too much money. To start off with Kansas City had several needs to address they needed help in all areas. Rather than spenidng all of their money in one place, they should have taken some chances on other guys who wouldn't be demanding such a monstrous contract. Now siging Gil meche. Dayton Moore, KC GM, said. "At the end of the day, he (Gil Meche) believed in what he believed, and he believed the Kansas City Royals are going to win." I think this guy is dreaming. I don't see how signing Jason LaRue, Brian Bannister, John bale, Ross Gload, Octavio Dotel, David Riske, and Gil Meche turn a team with over 100 losses into a team that wins. Meche has a career ERA of 4.65. Sorry Royal fans (if there are really any) but the Royals are still building and it looks like that is something they will be doing for a long time.

"meche is wait and see like og said"
55 MILLION FOR A GUY WHO IS "WAIT AND SEE". What is at all smart about that? How can this possibly be considered a good move when the guy is wait and see?

I wish the Royals the best of luck.....I really do. I'm a Cub fan so I would like nothing more than to see them keep the Sox out of the lead....i just don't see this happening for at least the next 5-6 years or more.

Gil Meche is bad, I mean, what are you doing Roayls? Are you rebuilding or not?! Way to panic on an average pitcher... it will be made funof for years! BUT the worst was Gary Matthews. This was totally a case of a team panic! The Angels thought they needed a center fielder and just looked at the "biggest name" out there. His "career" year was still very below average by today's standards! 79 RBI?!

First, I don't think Gil Meche was a horrible signing, I actually think it makes alot of sense. The worst in my opinion are a tie, the Zito deal for 126 with no buyout and the soriano deal at 136 with no buyout.

It's really not the worst, because if the deal does all that it's supposed to do then it probably is a good investment but...

The astronomical signing of Barry Zito is my choice.

That's alot of beer and peanuts to be sold.

Again, IF it gets the Giants to where they want to be and IF it brings fannies in the ballpark, then good for them.
