Your paper should start with an introduction that shows rather than tells what the paper is going to be about. For example, from my most recent paper: "Few people in history are infamous enough to earn the dubious distinction of having an era of history named for them. During the Cold War, however, there emerged a man whose name would be synonymous with witch-hunts, unfounded accusations, and anti-communism rhetoric. His name was Senator Joseph Raymond McCarthy, an Irish-American Catholic, and red-blooded patriot."
Next, your paper should have well developed paragraphs that are linear and flow. For example, the structure of my paper had paragraphs that discussed how Senator McCarthy felt about 7 different topics: Nature, Law, Universe, the Supernatural, Time, Humanity, and Fate. Each paragraph had an introduction, several body sentences, and a closing sentence.
All sources need to be cited and credited. Even if you paraphrase someone, if in doubt, cite them. It is better to be overly cautious than to receive an F for plagarism.
Finally, your essay should have a conclusion that ties everything together. Again, an example from my paper:
"Senator Joseph McCarthy was a man whose life was a complicated mix of oxymorons and rhetoric. Though he despised certain laws, he upheld others. While he did not run or capitalize on his Catholicism, he went to church regularly and marketed himself to the Catholic vote. He could hound someone mercilessly during his Senate hearings, then after the session had finished, bound up smiling, acting as if it were simply a game. Regardless of what one may think of Joseph McCarthy, he was indeed an important part of American history, even if it is a part that we do not wish to remember. "
I suggest writing an outline before you sit down to write your paper, so you know how your paper is going to flow. Always use spell check, and have someone else read your paper before you turn it in so they can tell you what you should fix to make it flow.
Good luck :)

1. The first paragraph> Needs to catch the reader's eye. Say someting interesting about the topic but DO NOT SOUND LIKE A DICTIONARY.
2. The first paragraph has to have the THESIS. One sentence that summarizes all your points and just by reading the thesis I should be able to figure out:
the topic
your view-point on the topic
what each para in your essay is about
3. Other para's should carry out and prove your thesis.
4. Strong conclusion...try to summarize your essay by saying things in another way. DO NOT JUST RE-WRITE THE OTHER PARTS OF THE ESSAY.
