I think you will enjoy London it is one of the World's great cities filled with history and historic sites. You must visit the Tower of London, the British Museum, the British Library, the Museum of London, The Tate Modern and Tate Britain galleries. See the changing f the guard at Buckinham Palace, Westminster Abbey, St Pauls, Stroll around the City of London (right in the centre of the city of London - confused then ask) do this on a Saturday or Sunday when there is no one around. The V&A, Natural History, The Science museums and if you are interested in transport the Transport Museum.
Go to Greenwich - where the World's time starts, visit Hampton Court, take a trip on the Thames, visit the Houses of Parliament, take a trip on the London Eye. Do the tourist bus trip where you can hop on and off at any time to explore.
Try Old Holborn at the top end of Oxford Street.
Lord there are so many things to do.
use the Tube and buses to get about - buy an Oyster Card it is the cheapest way of travelling.
If you are American try not to live up to the stereotype of the brash, boastful Yank; be polite, smile, say 'thank you' and 'please', do not 'say you're welcome' or 'have a nice day'.
When you order something in a pub, restaurant, cafe or anywhere the British say 'I will have...' 'Can I have...' or 'May I have...' NOT 'I want so an' so'.
Don't expect everyone to take US dollars or other currency - they won't - UK pounds only are accepted.
For the winter obviously an umbrella and warm clothing, but some days can be quite warm too. In spring lighter clothing and an umbrella. Take clothes that you can wear in layers taking off and putting back on as the weather demands.
And above all enjoy the visit.
You will find the Brits to be hospitable and friendly. But they also like civility in return.

Travelling to London at the last minute, but when and where are you from [ re cultural differences ]

First of all if you are travelling to London at the last minute the best place to arrange your accomodation is posted by hotels, hostels and serviced apartments at Cheaper than hotels which has a broad range of places with free inclusions to entice you to buy. i think the cheapest price is around GBP 10.

Most of the attractions in London [ if you are going now ie around January ] are great to attend - low demand, few queues etc.

Cultural differences ... hmmm .... just be considerate and smile gently. The British in London [ not the rest of the country ] are subject to big city syndrome .... too many people and a fast lifestyle. They are largely reserved, respect politeness ...just the common gifts of the good folks on the planet will get you through here as anywhere.

Doing research is best at London's official website listed below. But for big last minute accommodation discounts in London try the website mentioned above and below [ Cheaper than Hotels - UK ].

Remember that many things will be different and nobody wants to hear an American voice telling them that things in the US are better.

Speak quietly -- Americans are viewed as noisy and rude largely because they tend to shout

When asking for something say "Could I have?"

Nobody's interested in US $ or traveler's checks (which they'll refer to as traveller's cheques, anyway). £ sterling or nothing.

Warm, waterproof clothing. No loud plaids or checks.

Bring as little as possible. No point in going to another country and taking half of the US with you. You're on vacation. Nobody expects you to take your whole wardrobe. Remember when you're flying that many underwire bras will set off the security alarms, if not in the US then in airports and other security checks in other countries.

Take warm clothing, a raincoat and an umbrella. Don't forget your camera and be prepared to spend a lot of money. London is very expensive.
