No, a crawl space is not a bad thing. 1) It helps to ventilate the house just like an attic, so make sure you have at least two small openings (covered with screen to keep out animals) to keep the air circulating. 2) Its also a way to get to the plumbing in case you need to, so make sure you have a entrance.

I also suggest laying down plastic in the crawlspace to keep the moisture from rising up through your floor. It will save you money in the long run.

Our home is a rancher and we have a crawl space. We use part of the crawl space for storage (plastic lock boxes that are duct taped shut so no critters get inside). Mainly, though, the crawl space contains plumbing and heating pipes and all. Basically, if you went into an average basement and looked up at the ceiling you would see the stuff that's in the crawl space.

It's normal, really.

Good luck in your move!

In many areas of the south there are no basements. Homes are commonly built on concrete slabs, sometimes on piers which can range from a few inches to a few feet. The crawl space is just that - room to crawl under the home. Among the advantages are improved ventilation, a degree of safety from mild to moderate flooding and (the one that makes me happy to have a crawl space) venomous snakes of the south can not climb. Elevate the house a couple of feet and forget about those NASTY critters.

No, as a matter of fact houses without basements are normally supposed to have crawl spaces. Crawl spaces are the area under the actual building, inside the foundation(that's why the reference to the basement)which gives access to things like plumbing, wiring, etc.. It also allows the house to "breath". Of course it can be a bad thing if it allows drafts, or radon gas(which you can have checked for), but generally you probably want to have a crawl space. Yes, they can be icky places with spider webs, and other nasty things which like to live in dark places, but they allow people to get to things you need to get to.

older homes or homes built on solid rock areas normally have no basement or have just a craw space.

some tri-levels have crawl spaces under the main level as mini basements.

most craw spaces are nothing more than 3 foot of space, gravel filled, and all your heating, water, gas items are put in there out of the way. also allows air flow under the house and this prevents many rodents, mold and water issues.

they aren't a bad thing.

They are not necessarily bad, but I have found that the more room, the easier it is for maintenance workers (or the owner) to get in there to repair any problems. (I had to have some insulation replaced and the installer could barely fit!)

I had lattice enclosures in one house. the openings let in the air for ventilation so that mold would not grow. If animals in the area are a problem, the enclosure could have wire mesh behind it. I placed locks for security. Some are totally enclosed with ventillating areas or vents.

Crawl spaces are very common. Especially in ranch style homes.

in many areas they are common, and even useful... you have to have a way to get to pipes and things, wires, what not. keeping them closed up so small animals and things don't get under there can be a problem, they need ventilation grills and louvers often to the trick and you can put metal window screen over them too. yeah a basement is better, but in many places not worth the trouble to build, as the soil is too soft, too wet or..well its just a cheaper way to go. they get their name because mostly you literally have to crawl around under there to get to pipes or whatever. in colder climates, if you have a crawlspace, make sure the pipes under there are insulated and if a ver cold climate, wrapped with heat tapes.
