When I graduate from college and stuff, I'm going to leave the house, car, money, all of it, and travel somewhere and live in poverty for a year. A humble life, and its something I'll actually do too- I'm kinda pyscho. It rocks. Anyway, what do YOU think of that?

I know Buddha did that. I want to be a politician. A new politician...hah, we've heard that line before, right? No, but I'm serious. I'll be President one day baby. President Hacela!

I didn't say living in poverty rocks, I said being a nut rocks. (I'm a nut)

And, no, I would never become a burden on the taxpayers. I am very, very against that. I hate it, and would never do it.

Buddha did that. Left a wonderful palace for a life on the streets. He never did go back. Just make sure you do something positive with all the knowledge you get from the experience.

What I think, is that you're not psycho at all. Sounds like a great experience! (Just be sure you have enough to eat & those simple essentials.) Living in poverty, however, like TOTAL poverty "may" not be something you're prepared for. A "humble" life is one thing, yet....Just understand living in poverty ain't the greatest, but if you're up to it, go for it! I think you could learn a lot.

Edit: Some very interesting answers! I knew a master printmaker who, after a horrid divorce, chose to sleep in his car on the property of a friend (who lived in a trailer w/no electricity or running water or phone--for HIS own reasons) & now that he owns a very valuable home, he still feels he was most content in the "forest" with his friend, (who died if kidney failure), than at any other time in his life. Hey. Different strokes for different folks! (I'd still like to know the "motivation" of the asker...:

I think if your purpose is to try to understand how impoverished people live then you should join the Peace Corpse and actually be changing lives in a positive way rather than just living on a street somewhere in the States, because there are much more productive things you can do with that time and energy.

I don't think it's that crazy at all. In fact, I think living that way for a year can change how you see on things. It may make you more appreciative of what you have and makes the best of life.

In this increasingly materialistic world where everyone is chasing after their goals and sometimes going to extreme measures just to get ahead, it's nice to know that there are people who choose the opposite.

Good luck :)

This sounds very silly. I think maybe you don't understand the true hardships of poverty. If you do decide to do this, make sure you have ZERO access to your money to make it real. Make sure you have to jump through a bunch of hurdles before you can access any of your resources. Don't have health insurace, and when/if you try to get a job don't tell them you're a college grad, and don't contact people you associate with now. Make it as real as possible so you can see what a ridiculous adventure you've set out on.

I think you haven't been exposed enough to people who actualy live in the hobo jungles. Believe me, it's to cold in the winter..can you imagine, after a nights sleep under a bridge as you're coming out from under the bridge just praying the sun would be out enough to knock the chill off your bones...and how do you think you would like have dinner at Burger King...out back..from their dumpsters?
On the other hand, in the summer when you're laying in the park sleeping having to worry about someone beating you with a ball-bat because you're just a bumb. not to mention, when you're trying to sleep, those mosquitos seem to get bigger and come from everywhere.. Now, what do you think about that? Maybe you should just find a homeless person and pal around with him/her for a week.

Tell us that 'it rocks' after actually doing it for a year. Try telling it to the people who don't have a choice about living in poverty, and see what they think - you do have a choice, so you'll never know how it really feels.

I do not see anything wrong with your plan.
You can be who ever you want to be.
Just remember this one thing while you are out in this big old world...When someone wants to lean...be the pole.
Living off the land is something we all need to learn how to do.
This is the time of desposable's. You will proble find enought out there that people have throw away to live on.

Poverty usually means your giving up your health and safety, too. At least go to a country that is somewhat safe and work for the peace corps or something.

I don't think it would be the same, some people don't think they have a choice. Sell all you own and give it to some one that is homeless. That would be your first step to the humble life as you say.
