A legislative district is an area whose citizens vote for particular candidates. You will belong to several districts at once. You will have (among others) districts for local city council, county commissioners, state reps and senators, and federal reps and senators.

One interesting thing that goes on is the decision to change those boundaries based on population demographics and voting practices. Done in a certain way, it can virtually ensure a district will vote for a certain party. You should look this up. It's called Gerrymandering.

That should add a new dimension to your history project.

Sure. Federal ,state and local governmental units are divided into "districts', usually on the basis of equality of population. Correcting and changing district boundary lines is usually done every ten years after the US census, when the states "reapportion" the districts that have gained or lost population to equal them out .

A legislative district refers to the a legislative body as opposed to the executive or judicial branch of the government. Laws and ordinances originate in the legislature, and are passed and signed by the executive branch (president, governor, mayor, and so forth) It is a deliberative body with authority to draft, debate and pass laws.

The district can be a Federal congressional district, a state senate or assembly district (each state may call their two houses of the Legislature by different names); counties and cities may divide their districts for their county or municipal "legislative" bodies, like county Boards of Supervisors, City Councils, Aldermen, Selectmen, county judges, etc )

When we speak of a "legislative district", it means simply a single district within the state, with one member of the legislature for a single district. It can be a Congressman, a state senator, state Assemblyman, or city councilman, supervisor, and so forth

Good luck,
