Many a John was a jack*ss but that word was turned into a nick "Jack." :-)

Sometimes there are several people named John in a family, so one of them is called Jack. We can't assume that John is short for Jonathon. Many people are just named John. I think it is in our nature to give nicknames, and names with the same letter are good candidates. Nicknames don't have to be shorter.

hmm well John is actually Johnathan, so Jack is not short for John, it is short for Johnathan. got it.
