Okay... your question has me a little scared... you're in seventh grade and you seriously don't know???

Since you're asking about United States history, I would suppose that the technical answer to your question would be: about 1 minute after the Declaration of Independence was signed. However, it is very important to note that people have been migrating to North America since the Spanish Explorations of the 1400s (Christopher Columbus, is considered the first though he was actually an Italian sent by Spain). There are theories that the Vikings and possibly the Chinese came to North America even before that. The United States is called "the Melting Pot" because it is comprised of emigrates from all over the world. The definition of the word "immigration" is: to enter and usually become established; especially : to come into a country of which one is not a native for permanent residence (Websters Dictionary); therefore, the only people who would not be considered emigrates would be the Native Americans (the North American Indian Tribes). I hope this information will help with your report but I also hope you'll go the library and do some studying. History is fascinating and those who don't study it are really missing out!

The country began with immigration. Founded because of immigrants from england mostly coming to the New World to find a new place to live. It's peaked at different times in history though and with different ethnic groups.

230 yrs!!!!

All of the colonist were essentially immigrants to what was then the indigenous people's country.

But if you are talking about normal immigration the way we recognized it now. Focus on the periods of rapid economic growth; turn of century, post World wars, ect. That is usually when you see immigrants coming to the US in the largest numbers.

Before it was the United States....as confusing as that sounds. Good luck w/ your paper. You have a very interesting time period to research.....as the slave trade was huge at that point. You may want to narrow your paper down do to either. Immigration that was forced (slavery) or immigration that was by choice.

Have fun!

Immigration is the foundation of America, we all, except some Native Americans can trace our lineage back to some group of people who immigrated here. Good luck

Even the Native Americans immigrated over the Bering Straits...this is an unanswerable question if we go that far back.

Someone mentioned that the slave trade was big during the period you are interested in. Definitely that... but look into Irish immigration during that period - lots of Irish immigration at that time.
