Can anyone who understands the movie help me understand why Jack Nicholson was in the 1921 picture? and why was his wife seeing such random things?... and how did Tony all of the sudden become Danny again near the end?.. I am really confused.

The waiter tells Nicholson that "You are the caretaker. You've always been the caretaker." Nicholson became part of the house itself and part of the haunting. The picture shows that, in death, he joined the forces behind the house.

The random things the wife sees are previous events. The two guys with the masks are from a costume party from years before. Remember Halloran saying that events can leave a trace of themselves behind. As the hotel's power grows and as it draws more and more on Danny's power, these previous events pop up more and more.

Tony becoming Danny at the end (that was in the Weber version not the Nicholson version) implies that Tony was a defense mechanism Danny was using to deal with his own power and his fear of it. For the same reason a kid blames the broken lamp on his invisible friend, Danny blamed the scary visions on his invisible friend. It was safer than admitting the visions were originating inside himself.

btw, I don't believe the picture or the Tony revelation were in the book originally.

1. Its open to interpretation. It could be because he finaly gave in and surrendered to the hotel/ghosts. Or maybe he belonged there all along and finally rejoined the other ghosts.
2. What random things? I don't understand the question.
3. Tony emerged to warn them to get out.
