Genetic engineering is our only hope.
By the year 2050, the world's population is projected to exceed 10,000,000,000. Of the 6.5 billion on the planet currently, 1.5 billion are malnourished. How are we going to feed another 3.5 billion mouths. There is no frontier. We will have to get more food per acre.
Cheap oil will soon disappear. Where are we going to get our energy? Genetically modified plants.
GM foods are healthier than non-GMO foods...They're tested thoroughly before being released. We now wha proteins are allegenic and no one is interested in transferring them to other species. In fact, genetic engineers are removing allergens from soybeans. They typically only involve one gene change whereas cultivars that are produced by traditional breeding may have hundred or thousands of new genes. Golden rice has Vit A which will help prevent blindness in tens of thousands of people. Bt maize has less fungal contamination (read about fumonisin). Bt crops means less pesticides in the environment.

Genetically modified (GM) products (food etc) should be OK for our use. Nothing new is created in the process. It is only a remix of what is already existing in nature. Remix of the genes within species is a natural process. GM is remix between species. If it is not good, harmful, etc., it will automatically die out. The opposition for GM is mainly due to fear of a few rich commercial organizations taking over or controlling an industry (eg Agriculture) of common man. The fear is justified. GM may be purchased by the concerned Government and distributed free or at nominal affordable cost. We need not overconcern about environmental considerations. Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Forest fires, etc. are not wanted. But can you prevent them? We will learn to live with GM as we have done with natural calamities.

If we did not use genetically modified products, we would literally all starve to death. Every commercially important plant or animal is a genetic modification from the original wild type; recently, we have been able to make intentional modifications rather than relying on the random ones that occur naturally, but there is no difference.

No, because the companies that produce them are not required by the FDA to disclose how they are made or, for example, what kind of DNA they usedin creating hybrid products. So someone with a seafood allergy could have a reaction when they eat tortilla chips in which the corn has been spliced with fish DNA.

No! They are freaky. There is nothing wrong with nature and the way it grows things, is there? GM is just a way for big food producers to make more money, through mixing genes to produce hybrid veg that doesn't go off, or doesn't need water or whatever!
If they're so good, how comes rich people buy organic?

The standards for testing new foods and ? drugs has gotten lessened. I am just sure that years down the line, they will say oh oh-- we had no idea that would do that. Well, duh, if you do not do the think tank research, you do not come up with what might be. And us the consumer will be the looser. We get disgusted at the "oil" money thing. Believe me, it is in all businesses. No i do not. They are not all knowing

Nope it hasn't been tested long enough to know if it is goo dfor you or not. Unfortunatly there is a lot of G.M foods out there that we eat and it makes me wonder why so many people are obese and are getting cancer etc...

Products have been genetically modified since mendeleev and his pea plants. Nothing wrong with breeding something with favourable charateristics.
