I can't really reccomend a brand. My suggestion to you would be to go to a music store, pick out a few guitars in your price range and play them. From there choose the one that plays and sounds the best.

Make the rounds of a few music stores. Look at prices but don't go cheap. Cheap guitars are not made well and soon the neck will warp. I would choose a medium price for my first guitar. In time you will know if you want to spend your money on one of the higher priced and better quality guitars. You will know what you want if you try them out. You shouldn't pay the asking price before trying to get them come down some on the asking price.

You could also check out some pawn shops.

If you know a musician, ask him to help you out. He will know if the neck is straight.

Takamine is not bad for a starter acoustic. They sound decent and are pretty easy to play. They also usually have electronics so you can plug into a PA or practice amp if you ever do a show or coffee house gig.

Ibanez exotic woods are from $350 - 550 online; they're acoustic-electric, easy to play, many with cutaways so you have more neck to play on and they look smokin'.

BTW, I tried several Washburn models and I'd never buy anything by them if my life depended on it.

My dad plays upright bass. I love it. Depends what you want to do, though. I don't think the uprights can take as much manhandling as electric, could be wrong...
