First, I have to say that my refrigerator does have a light both in the fridge section AND the freezer. But, for those of you who don't, I'll answer the question!

It's probably because the freezer is usually at the top of the refrigerator and closer to overhead lighting. And because you look into the freezer at eye level, it gives you a better view of it's contents without the aid of an internal light.

It's more critical to have a light in the lower refrigerator section simply for the opposite reasons above: this area is closer to the ground and further away from any kind of lighting. You also have to stoop over to get a clearer look inside. Still another reason is that since the refrigerator space is larger, you'd have a tendency to place items behind others, several layers deep. The light makes it easier to spot a food item towards the back.

ive heard this before. but i have a light in both of mine. but it might be because mine is a side by side door thing. it could also be because the fridge is used more. or because of how the freezer is closer up twords the light..just a guess.
